The Mahon Men's Art Group

Profile of the Men

Noel Kent
Art Tutor Mahon Men’s Art Group

I am a self-taught artist who with the support of Mahon CDP was given the use of a school classroom in Mahon in Cork to encourage unemployed males to get involved in the arts. I have seen the men’s art group in Mahon flourish. I am in my fifties and am originally from mount Eden in Gurranabraher. I was taken aback by the positive reaction to the classes.

I developed an interest in painting thirty years ago. I worked in the North Infirmary (north cha) until it closed its doors in January 1987. Painting up until then was just a hobby, suddenly I had time on my hands, time I was able to devote to painting and to giving something back to my local community. Through the support of Mahon CDP I progressed from volunteer to a paid position as a tutor with the group.

Dave Carey

I was born in a north side suburb of Cork in 1982 but moved to Mahon in the early 80’s. I became very interested in painting at an early age and after observing the works of past masters such as Monet, Renoir and Friedrich, to name but a few, I became intrigued quickly.

I started to paint in watercolour because it was a medium that suited me. Very soon, I began to sell paintings and early in February 2004 I joined the Mahon men’s art group. The environment of this group encouraged me even more.

Richard O’Sullivan

I am 57 years old. I moved to Mahon from Summerhill South in 1979. I joined the Mahon Men’s Art Group when it began. Originally, I attended the Group twice a week. In recent times I have had time restrictions and was not able to attend as often as I would have liked, however, I am now looking forward to getting back into the art again. I really enjoy the art but I don’t take it too seriously.
