The
Estate Management Group
is Part of Mahon Community Development
Project
The Estate Management
Group which consists of the residents from Avenue de Rennes
in Mahon was formed in September 1996 when residents met with
Mahon Community Development Project to discuss certain issues
which were of great concern to them. The most immediate concern
being the absence of railings around the houses.
Serious
Concern expressed by Avenue de Rennes Residents
Safety of the children
on the road was the most immediate concern as the houses had
no railings. Avenue de Rennes is one of the busiest roads
in Mahon due to the schools, pubs, shops, and a church and
this was a very big worry to all members of the Group.
Collective
Action taken by Residents
We
had tried one way or another on our own to get something done
regarding the railings but were told nothing could be done.
Individually, we were getting nowhere. So we formed the Estate
Management Group. We had regular meetings at the Community Resource
Centre and received a lot of advice and training from Mahon
Community Development Project.
We
made out a three year plan we felt we would like to tackle as
a group once we had our railings .
The
Group successfully obtained railings for the houses on Avenue
de Rennes.

Tackling
the Litter Problem on Avenue de Rennes
We
then set about tackling the litter problem on our road and organised
a clean up day. We contacted Cork Corporation and they provided
us with skips, brushes and bags. Adults and children came out
and took part in this venture. The Lord Mayor and the litter
wardens came to Mahon on these clean up days to congratulate
the good work.
The
Lord Mayor invited the children to the City Hall for refreshments
and all had a great day as a reward for their participation.
Litter
Problem taken on board by businesses in the Shopping Centre
Businesses
in the Shopping Centre were approached by members of the Estate
Management Group and invited to form a shopping centre maintenance
group to maintain the common area around the shop units. Occupiers
of the Shop Units (Pubs, Shops, Doctors, Chemist, community
organisations etc.) came together to tackle the problems in
the Shopping Centre.
A
member of the Estate Management Group represents the Community
Resource Centre on this Shopping Centre Maintenance Group. Each
Unit pays a quarterly fee which goes towards having the shopping
area cleaned every morning.
