What is the National Community Development Programme?

This Programme was set up by the Minister for Social Welfare in 1990 in recognition of the role of community development in tackling poverty and disadvantage. The Programme provides core funding for communities to develop Resource Centres in areas experiencing social and economic disadvantage.

These projects provide support, development opportunities and services to community groups and individuals within their areas and target groups who experience social exclusion and/or discrimination.

The Programme is the first nationally funded programme of community development. Projects are given a three year funding commitment which provides for core costs (staff and overheads).

Mahon CDP is one of 170 of these projects under the National Community Development Programme and is currently funded through the Department of Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs.

Support is provided to Mahon CDP from the Mid West Community Development Support Agency Ltd.

What is Community Development?

It’s about people joining together to have more control over their lives and more real participation in the decisions that affect them in their neighbourhoods and communities.

It’s about appreciating and building on people’s own skills, knowledge and experience.

Its about challenging discrimination and developing more equal relationships between people.
